Putuoshan
Putuoshan is located in a small island off the
east coast of Zhejiang and can be reached by ferry from Ningbo.
The island is a national park and covers an area of 13 sq km. Putuoshan
is one of the most sacred Buddhist mountains in China. Many of the
temples at Putuoshan are dedicated to Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy
who is said to have appeared on the island.
Putuoshan has been a Buddhist place of pilgrimage
for over 1,000 years. The largest temple is the Puji temple, which
was built during the Tang dynasty (618-907AD), and houses a statue
of Guanyin surrounded by her 32 different manifestations.
